In countries where state support for the arts is common, and the media pursues a policy of publicity, music criticism can sometimes be a weapon in the political struggle. In Turin, where I was the first (and at the time when I was writing these lines, the last) American as the musical director of the opera house, I often could determine the political credo of the publication by the way my performances were described.
