For many listeners, Sir Thomas Beecham was the greatest conductor to work with Haydn's symphonies. But the scrupulously edited edition, prepared by Howard Chandler Robbins Landon, came out only in 1961, after the death of Beecham. However, Beechem's notes are still appreciated. Many fans of the opera would have taken a CD with the recording of The Barber of Seville with Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi on an uninhabited island, but the text and style of their performance contradict what the musicologists tell us about the manner of performance adopted in the time of Rossini.
