The conductor program, co-led by Michael Tilson-Thomas and avant-garde composer Bruno Maderna, was organized spontaneously. However, they allowed us to conduct and allowed to observe. Tanglewood boiled like a cauldron that summer. Nobody seems to have said a single good word about the other. The first time I felt the atmosphere of the “jungle”: arrogance, despair, suspicion, rumors and passions, and all this together with the hope of getting a job or at least moving forward. “Don't worry,” Michael said, “wait until Lenny gets here.” And he was right.
