In 1980, I sat on the side behind the curtains, right behind the last row of the first violins, at a performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, which was led by its main conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. Giulini was one of the deepest and most devout people I have known in my life. In the last year of World War II, he spent nine months with his Jewish family, hiding from the Nazis in the tunnel under the Roman house where his wife’s uncle lived — and this forever made him sad and compassionate. He saw the worst manifestations of human nature and the untold effects of war.
