In 1972, when Leonard Bernstein rehearsed Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera, he had a serious clash with Marilyn Horn, who sang the main part for the first time. Horn possessed one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of the century and in the last line of “Habanera” moved to a powerful lower register - chest register to sing the line “Prends garde à toi” (“Watch out”), slowing down to a complete stop. Bernstein said: “Jackie, please do not do this. You just show off instead of being Carmen. ”
